Improbable, yet Adorable Nation

View this email in your browser

This month of August you will notice many festivities revolving around Indonesia's Independence Day and the country's rich and vibrant culture. And that's a lot of culture.

How big is the country?, you may ask. We suggest you read Elizabeth Pisani's book Indonesia, Etc.: Exploring the Improbable Nation. Her book explores a country inhabited by 270 million people from many different ethnic groups, who between them speak 719 languages, in an archipelago of more than 18,000 islands!  Bahasa Indonesian is the national language, binding the nation together: "Unity in Diversity".

The mix of cultures, languages, religions, traditions and histories, and the stunning natural beauty, is the basis of this author's book.

Indonesian or not, if you happen to be in this part of the world, take this opportunity to explore the Indonesian archipelago. See our list here: Explore the Indonesian Archipelago . Or visit these UNESCO World heritage sites in Indonesia!

If music is your way to learn about culture, head to The Ubud Village Jazz Festival  ! It will be held on the 16th and 17th August 2019 at the Arma Museum, Ubud.

Unity in diversity inspired the Ubud Village Jazz Festival 2019 (UVJF) too. Themed "Certainly Indonesia", this annual music festival has an optimistic spirit for the future of Indonesia.

This year, international and local acts range across all jazz categories, such as the Aaron Goldberg Trio, Harry Mitchel Trio, Yvon Thibeault's Perspectives, Sri Hanuraga featuring Dira Sugandi, Voyager 4, Caleb Fortuin and Bali Friends, and many more.

On the culinary side, you can embark on an Indonesian food journey at Sofitel Bali Nusa Dua on the 16th and 17th August, with a wide range of authentic, traditional and rustic flavours from the Indonesian archipelago. Up for some Balinese cuisine? Check here please: Best Balinese Restaurants.
