To prevent the annual tradition of Ramadan mudik, The Transportation Ministry has restricted all types of passenger travel by air, sea, land as well as railway to and from regions that had imposed large-scale social restrictions (PSBB) and those that had been declared COVID-19 red zones, The Jakarta Post reports. The ban is already in effect and will be in place until June 1st for non-essential air travel and May 31st for land travel—both for public and private transport. Toll, national and provincial roads would remain open but checkpoints would be set up at several locations to prevent 'mudik' movement. Until May 7th, those who insist on going home for mudik will be ordered to return to their point of departure but after that, violators will be sanctioned with a fine of up to Rp. 100 million or 1 year of jail time. Initially planned for two weeks from April 10th to April 23rd, 2020, DKI Jakarta Governor, Anies Baswedan, has officially extended the Large-Scale Social Restriction (PSBB) in DKI Jakarta for four weeks until May 22nd, 2020 following the ever-growing number of COVID-19 positive cases in DKI Jakarta.
